Teach English in Spain

Spain TEFL

Would you like to get paid to teach in Spain? You are not alone, Spain is one of the most popular TEFL destinations and we highly recommend this country either to get certified or to work.

Spain is beautiful country steeped in history with a strong culture, great food, beautiful wine, and warm weather. Spain is laid back too- it’s a country famous for its mid-day siesta in which everything shuts down so people can relax and take a nap. Spanish culture is one that loves life, food, and drinking. They sleep late, the relax, and they stay out late. (Nightlife in Madrid is some of the best in Europe). For someone who wants to live a slow and relaxed life, Spain is a great destination to teach in.

Currently, there is a big effort on part of the Spanish government to improve the English skills of Spaniards. They are hiring a lot of teachers right now and inviting people with skills to come over. It’s much easier to get a job now than it has been in the past. Living in Spain is relatively easy and migration rules are easier than in other parts of Europe, especially for those looking to be English teachers. Outside of the major cities, English is not as widely spoken as it is elsewhere so without a good knowledge of Spanish, it will be hard to communicate.

In order to legally teach in Spain, you must have a work permit. To get a work permit, your employer has to sponsor you and submit a petition to the Spanish government proving why the job cannot be done by a Spanish citizen. Since Spain is part of European Union, the same visa rules that apply in other countries apply here. Thus it is much easier for EU residents to get a job teaching English than other people. That being said, in recent years Spain has pushed to make English more widespread and thus there are a lot of job openings.

Salaries in Spain

Teachers in Spain earn around 1,400 Euros per month. This is a enough to live off as Spain is a pretty cheap country to live in. If you go out drinking a lot, then an English teacher’s salary will not be enough for you. However, you can find private classes that will be able to augment your salary. Because of the push by the government to increase English proficiency, jobs are widely available. Moreover, taxes are not as high as in other parts of Europe like France or Holland.
